Position Description

This position is responsible for; combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; in answering emergency calls; and in operation and maintenance of fire equipment, auxiliary apparatus and quarters.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but may serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Essential Functions

The Essential Functions contained within this Position Description are representative of the required responsibilities for the position, and may not include all responsibilities.   • Must be present on work site to perform essential job functions.
  • Work involves training for and participating in duties of protecting life and property by firefighting and rescue activities usually under close supervision.
  • Employees of this class are required to learn and participate in the operations of apparatus and may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as smoke and cramped surroundings.
  • Although firefighting and rescue work are the most difficult and responsible area of activity, the major portion of the time is spent drilling and studying methods, techniques and organization and in routine duties in the care and maintenance of the District’s property and equipment.
  • Specific orders and directions are given by superior officers, but the work requires initiative and a thorough individual understanding of firefighting methods.

Minimum Requirements

  • State of Florida Certified Firefighter
  • State of Florida Certified EMT
  • Valid State of Florida Driver’s License
  • Valid CPAT/Candidate Physical Abilities Test (issued within last 12 months)
  • Must pass entrance physical by District physician
  • Must pass pre-employment background and drug screening
  • After hire, must successfully complete District Recruit Orientation and EMT Credentialing

Preferred Qualifications

State of Florida Certified Paramedic
EVOC Certified

Additional Functions

  • Attends training courses.
  • Reads and studies assigned material related to firefighting and prevention.
  • Responds to fire alarms with a company and may be responsible on scene to: Operate auxiliary pumps and auxiliary equipment; Lay and connect hose; Hold nozzles; Direct fog or water streams; Raise and climb ladders; and Use chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other equipment
  • Ventilates burning buildings by opening windows and skylights or by chopping holes in roofs and floors.
  • Removes persons from danger, administer first aid to injured persons.
  • Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris.
  • Participates in fire drills and attends classes in firefighting and first aid.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of District property including cleaning and washing walls and floors; making minor repairs to property and equipment; washing, hanging and drying hoses and washing, cleaning, polishing apparatus, and testing auxiliary apparatus.
  • Relays instructions, orders and information; gives location of alarms received.
  • May perform assigned fire inspections, checking fire escapes, building exits and related structures for compliance with fire prevention ordinances and codes.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Some knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the District.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at considerable heights.
  • Ability to learn a wide variety of firefighting duties and methods within a reasonable length of time.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in operating an emergency vehicle.

Mathematical Aptitude

Physical Ability
Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, hazardous materials, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, water hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, or animal/wildlife attacks.
